Pac-12 and University of Oregon Standout Norman Xiong (a) to Receive 2018 Barracuda Championship Exemption

RENO, Nev. (May 3, 2018) – The Barracuda Championship has a history of granting exemptions to players that go on to world-class careers on the PGA TOUR. In 2012, relatively unknown Patrick Reed received an exemption. Just last month he was slipping on the green jacket after capturing the Masters. In 2016, Jon Rahm was invited to tee it up at Montrêux. He is now ranked third in the Official World Golf Rankings. Jason Day, Adam Scott, Luke Donald: these are just a small sample of past sponsor exemptions.

Norman Xiong’s name can now be added to that list. Xiong, an amateur and currently a sophomore at the University of Oregon, is coming off a record-setting season that included three straight tournament wins. His streak started with the Oregon Duck Invitational, continued at The Goodwin and carried on to the Western Intercollegiate where Xiong took home the title. Xiong has five individual victories this season alone for the Ducks and recently was at the top of the watch list for the Haskins Award; annually presented to the most outstanding collegiate golfer.

“As we celebrate our 20th year, we are so excited to have Norman join us this August at Montrêux,” said Tournament Director Chris Hoff. “He is one of the hottest players in collegiate golf right now. I have no doubt we will look back and place Norman in the same class as many of our previous sponsor exemption recipients that have gone on to fantastic careers.”

“I want to thank everyone at the Barracuda Championship for giving me this opportunity to showcase my skills on the next level,” Xiong said. “The Barracuda Championship has an exciting format and I look forward to competing against some of the best competition in the world this summer at Montrêux.”

“Norman is an incredible player and I am excited for him that he gets to play in such an amazing tournament,” said Casey Martin, University of Oregon head golf coach. “I am anxious to see how he performs.”

The Barracuda Championship PGA TOUR event will take place July 30 – Aug. 5, 2018.
