Longtime Barracuda Championship Volunteer Awarded Prestigious PGA TOUR “Volunteer of the Year”
RENO, Nev. (Dec. 7, 2018) – The 2018 PGA TOUR Volunteer of the Year award has been presented to Henry “Skip” Monge, a longtime Barracuda Championship volunteer. The award was announced on Dec. 6 at the PGA TOUR’s Tournament Meeting, which recognizes tournaments from across the nation. The PGA TOUR and Barracuda Championship will donate $5,000 to Monge’s charity of choice, My Hometown Heroes, a Reno-based non-profit that provides scholarships to young adult cancer survivors across the country.
Annually, the PGA TOUR credits a “Volunteer of the Year” award to someone who strives for excellence, is driven by volunteer work and demonstrates love for the game of golf.
Monge is the first Barracuda Championship volunteer to win the PGA TOUR Volunteer of the Year Award.
“When we submitted our nomination, we realized that there are volunteers who have been volunteering for the PGA TOUR for more than 40 years, but we felt Skip stood out as a man that gives so generously to so many PGA TOUR tournaments. His level of dedication is rare, remarkable and something to be honored,” said Lyndsey Deater, director of community outreach at Barracuda Championship.
Monge has volunteered for the Barracuda Championship and various PGA TOUR tournaments for more than 16 years, accumulating a total of 6,500 “on-course” hours in addition to time spent recruiting, planning and traveling to each tournament.
Some of Monge’s volunteer experience includes marshaling at AT&T Pebble Beach for seven years and LPGA Legends as well as volunteering as hole captain at the Safeway Open, the Cadillac Match Play and the USGA Sr. US Open.
At Barracuda Championship, Monge has helped with recruiting volunteers and training new marshals. In the four years since Monge began volunteering as marshal chair, the number of marshals has more than doubled.
This past March, Monge was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer that rapidly spread to his brain. He still made it to the 2018 Barracuda Championship with the same smile he brings each year, a true testament to his passion and perseverance.
“In our eyes, there is no one more deserving than Skip to be the PGA TOUR 2018 Volunteer of the Year. His service to our PGA TOUR family is nothing short of extraordinary,” said Barracuda Championship Tournament Director Chris Hoff.
