Ho Sung Choi, Golf’s Biggest Swing, Given Exemption to Barracuda Championship
RENO, Nev. (May 31, 2019) –Despite growing up 40 yards from the ocean and having a fisherman father and freediver mother, golf found Ho Sung Choi and hasn’t let go. The phenom out of South Korea, with golf’s most unique swing, will play at this year’s Barracuda Championship thanks to a sponsor exemption.
“We are thrilled to add Ho Sung Choi to the field,” said Chris Hoff, Barracuda Championship Tournament Director. “We absolutely love everything he stands for: a self-taught, world-class player who’s found much success and remained true to who he is.”
Choi grew up in Pohang, a port city in South Korea. After a major injury to his thumb, he was exempt from a mandatory army enlistment and found himself working part-time at Anyang Country Club where his boss required him to learn the game of golf. He is self-taught from golf magazines and after two years of practice, he turned pro.
After numerous wins on the Korean Tour, followed by a break-out Japan Tour win at the 2013 Indonesia PGA Championship, Choi’s unique swing found internet fame. The “fisherman swing,” as it’s come to be known, adds 13 yards to his drive. Years after discovering his signature swing, Choi won the 2018 Casio World Open, propelling him to an Official World Golf Ranking of 194th at age 45.
Now, Choi is taking American golf by storm. In February of this year, Choi was given an exemption to the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, his first time in the United States. He will be playing at the John Deere Classic in July before experiencing the high altitude, long course structure and Modified Stableford scoring format at the Barracuda Championship July 22–28.
“He exudes excitement and we know our fans will fall in love with his fun personality and big swing when he comes to Montrêux Golf & Country Club this summer,” said Hoff.
